Contest
Summary
We all know there are little things we can do each day to reduce waste, increase recycling rates, and stop litter – and we also know that some of our friends, coworkers, and family members don’t seem to get the hint when we remind them to do their part. The goal of this contest is to get the word out on your favorite way to defeat trash – using design.
In Phase I of the contest, nine winners will be selected:
In Phase II, those nine designs will be posted online, and the design from each region that receives the most votes from online voters will be selected as the “Top Trash Conqueror!” While posters are great, they use a lot of energy to print, ship, and distribute - so we're going to get designs out via social media and the web as much as possible!
Designs must be submitted by May 1, 2012. First round winners will be announced by June 2012. Second round voting online will take place from July to September 1, 2012, with top winners officially recognized at a gallery event in New York City in November 2012.
Prizes & Awards
Nine (9) first round winners will have their design posted online and advance to the second round with a chance to win recognition as the “Top Trash Conqueror.” In addition, designs will be printed and (strategically!) sent across New Jersey, New York and Puerto Rico in a wide campaign to defeat trash.
Three (3) “Top Trash Conquerors” (one each from New Jersey, New York and Puerto Rico) will be selected by online vote and will win a trip to New York City for a gallery showing and press event in November 2012.
Poster Requirements
2. Recycling
3. Anti-Litter
Who Is Eligible?

Poster Requirements
- Designs must be 18” x 24” (landscape or portrait), submitted electronically to info@studentsvstrash.com in PDF format.
- No copyrighted material may be used in the design
- Poster message must focus on one of these three themes:
2. Recycling
3. Anti-Litter
- Poster must include a call to
action within the design that encourages
those who have seen the design to interact with the campaign in some way, either through
Facebook or Twitter. This is to help us gauge how much these designs actually reduce waste! So, if your poster messages encourages people to pick-up litter, the tagline can say, "What did you pick up today? Tell us @StudentsVsTrash." Other examples: “What Would Be More Beautiful Without Litter?
Post Your Picture on Facebook,” or “How Could YOU Reuse a Yogurt Container for
a Year? Tell us @StudentsVsTrash.” The Facebook page can be found by searching
“Students Vs. Trash,” while the Twitter account can be found at twitter.com/studentsvstrash. We also encourage the use of QR codes on posters to directly connect the audience with the social media site.
- Posters may be created in either English or Spanish. Submissions from Puerto Rico are required to submit one version in Spanish, though an English version may be submitted as well.
- Submissions must include release form, contact information, and a design justification (limit 1-page). To download the release form, click here.
