What do you do with an abandoned 124,500-square foot building? A couple of years ago, a Wal-Mart in McAllen, Texas shut down and relocated. It left behind a massive building with a concrete outside, and industrial-grade linoleum floors. The building barely had any windows, but instead had drop ceilings where fluorescent lighting was once used.
Often times, buildings like this Wal-Mart stay vacant for years and become an eyesore, symbolizing economic struggle. McAllen's metro area was rated the poorest in the nation in 2011, so no one expected anything to come out of this "greyfield." However, the city decided to buy the structure from Wal-Mart for $5 million and turn this empty space into a new public library.
The library opened this past December, over two years and $26 million after the start of the project. Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle, an architecture firm from Minneapolis, created something beautiful from the ugly Wal-Mart remains. The McAllen Central Library saw its membership increase by a quarter just within the first month! It is now the biggest single-story library in the United States. View the
