According to a poll of over 1,000 Americans, littering and other eco unfriendly activities are seen as more embarrassing than cheating on your taxes!
Smoking cigarettes and driving a 'gas guzzler' are some of the other activities that were also looked down upon. 20 percent of poll participants said they would feel some sense of shame if caught not recycling plastic bottles, using paper plates, and letting the water run while not using it. Suzanne Shelton, CEO of Shelton Group, said, “Thanks to years of green growth, messaging and new products, the idea of sustainability has finally permeated the American conscience.”
And, the even better news is that research shows that once 20 percent of a population adopts a behavior, it reaches a tipping point and show grow steadily! Take cigarettes for instance. 40 years ago more than 40 percent of Americans smoked, and now the number is under 20 percent. Big change can happen in a relatively small amount of time. Peer pressure is a powerful tool, use it to your advantage and encourage everyone to become eco-friendly!
